Art
Art I: This course will begin with the basic techniques of observational drawing. Learning to draw from observation develops a greater understanding of how the world actually appears, rather than how we perceive it. After the basic principles are established, we will learn concepts such as color theory and 3D design, through a variety of mediums. Learning the basic techniques of accurate drawing will allow for greater freedom in creativity and visual expression later in the year and in later art courses.
Art II & III: After the basic principles are re-established, we will learn concepts such as color theory and 3D design, through a variety of mediums. The basic techniques of accurate drawing will allow for greater freedom in creativity and visual expression throughout the year. Since this course includes students at multiple levels of experience, project requirements and objectives may be very different, especially later in the year. For example, Art III projects will be at a higher level of difficulty and complexity than Art II, even if both are working towards the same objective. The higher the level of art course, the more freedom will be given in the choice of composition, subject matter, and even medium.
Art IV: This is Aristoi’s most advanced level of art. Being that these students have had years of establishing the basics and fundamentals of Art, we will be able to apply them in a much more personal and self-expressive way. The use of Art throughout history has been to impress ideals upon the viewer, to make them ponder, to make them think. We will use this class to create pieces that do just that. The expression of the individual will be seen through this timeless method of communication.
Open Studio Hours
Any art student is welcome to continue their artwork if need be outside of their assigned class time. There are opportunities to come into my classroom during my guided study or their guided study, depending on the day. There is also the opportunity to come in during lunch or leisure. Students will need to receive a pass from me to do so. This privilege can be revoked if the student becomes a distraction to other students.
Competitions
There will be opportunities for voluntary participation in art competitions throughout the first semester. If artists participate in these contests then they have the opportunity to earn points towards their letterman (letterman requirements on separate document), accomplishments to put on college applications, and most provide the artist with opportunities for scholarships and other special opportunities. The contests that we will participate in this year are:
- Houston Livestock and Rodeo School Art Contest
- UIL Vase
- Aristoi Classical Academy Yearbook Competition
- Scholastic Art Competition (Art I-III only)
*Due to the nature of art competitions, most of the pieces need to be done in the fall semester so they can be judged in the spring semester and returned by the end of the year.
